Just Jane Night Taxy – Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby
Lincolnshire has a wealth of aviation heritage from the early days of the RAF, through the awesome splendour of the Lancaster of WW2, to the thrill and excitement today of the Red Arrows.
Greenfield Farm B & B, based in Bomber County, is central to a whole range of Aviation Heritage sites such as RAF Coningsby, the East Kirkby Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, the Dam Buster Memorial at Woodhall Spa and the Red Arrows base at RAF Scampton.
Discover a landscape of wartime aviation in Bomber County.
Below are listed some of the aviation heritage centres within easy reach of Greenfield Farm B&B.
Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, East Kirkby, PE23 4DE – 17 miles
Relive a World War Two Bomber Airfield.
Experience the sights and sounds, smells and atmosphere of a bomber airfield. The only place in the country to see a Lancaster Bomber on an original wartime airfield, and ride in it (pre-book only)!
Including, original Control Tower, welcoming NAAFI and an emotionally evocative Memorial Chapel containing the 848 names of personnel who gave their lives from this airfield. The largest Bomber Command museum in the country!
Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors Centre, Coningsby, LN4 4SY – 16 miles
Here you have the opportunity to see the Flight’s historic aircraft at close quarters and to observe the RAF BBMF technicians working to maintain them in airworthy condition.
Access to the RAF BBMF hangar is by guided tour only (admission charges apply). Hangar tours are led by knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteer guides, who give freely their time and who, in some cases, have first-hand experience of the aircraft. Tours last approximately one and half hours.
International Bomber Command Centre LN4 2RF – 17 miles
The International Bomber Command Centre includes a 31 metre tall memorial spire, the UK’s tallest war memorial, and walls that will eventually feature the names of all Bomber Command aircrew that lost their lives during the Second World War. There are also two peace gardens: one Lincolnshire and one International. An educational interpretation centre with full facilities will be completed in 2017.
RAF Scampton Lincoln LN1 2ST – 18 miles
Today Scampton leads an interesting life as home to the RAF Aerobatic Team – The Red Arrows.
To celebrate the history of Scampton, we have created a station Heritage Centre, it’s housed in one of the original WW2 hangers and contains over 1500 artifacts (including a Blue Steel Missile) which will be of interest to all aviation enthusiasts around the world. Entry to the Heritage Centre is free to the general public. All we ask is that you contact the curator prior to your visit as the Heritage Centre is not permanently manned and due to current security measures access to the station is not possible without prior arrangement. www.raf.mod.uk/rafscampton/aboutus/rafscamptonheritagecentre.cfm
